Description
The journals of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark show that music was an integral part of their famous journey. Music brought welcome entertainment to the men far from home and served as a diplomatic bridge to the American Indians they met on their way. Although Lewis and Clark themselves did not play, they had two fiddlers, Pierre Cruzatte and George Gibson, among the 30 or so men who went with them. Other members of the expedition sang and danced. The journals do not mention specific tunes the men played, but each of the pieces included here comes from the period and is of the type they might have played.
